How do Fat Injections work?

Soft-tissue fillers, most commonly Fat Injections, can help fill in lines, wrinkles and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. What does the procedure for Fat Injections involve?

Administration of Fat Injections is a three step procedure which is performed under local anesthesia and / or sedation on an out patient basis in a Medical Centre or a clinic. Depending on the extent of the procedure, Fat Injections normally take about 30 - 60 minutes.

• Step 1 of Fat Injection Procedure - The donor site from where the fat will be removed (e.g. abdomen, thighs, buttocks) will be cleansed and numbed by injecting a local anesthetic. Fat will be withdrawn using a syringe with a large-bore needle or a cannula (the same instrument used in Liposuction) attached to a suction device.
• Step 2 of Fat Injection Procedure - The fat is then prepared by centrifuging. This packs the fat cells and separates blood and other fluids that might be suctioned out. The fat is packed in several syringes.
• Step 3 of Fat Injection Procedure - The recipient site will be cleansed and numbed with local anesthetic. The fat will be injected with a needle deeply into the skin, in different layers, locations and amounts. Volumes of up to 50 - 100 cc can be used to cover the entire face.

What to expect after Fat Injection procedure?

Depending on the area, there may be mild to moderate pain or discomfort in the area treated with Fat Injections. There will be some swelling, bruising or redness in both the donor and recipient sites. The swelling and puffiness in the recipient site may last several weeks, especially if a large area was filled. Any redness that appears in the injected site usually disappears within 24 hours. However, in some individuals, particularly fair-skinned patients, this redness may persist for a week or more. Tiny scabs may also form over the needle-stick areas; these generally heal quickly.

What is the outcome of Fat Injections?
