Finding affordable dental care outside of North America has gained a great deal of popularity in the past few years due to the lower cost of treatments in Central America and parts of Europe or Asia. Dental care treatments vary from necessary treatments such as root canals and extractions to cosmetic treatments such as tooth whitening.
Dentistry is the art and science of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions, diseases, and disorders of the oral cavity, and its associated structures in human beings. A dentist is a doctor qualified to treat diseases, malformations of, and injuries to teeth.
Dentists who take additional training can qualify for an advanced specialization. A Prosthodonist specializes in dental treatments for missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues, using materials that are compatible with the body. A Periodontist specializes in diagnosis and treatment of gum diseases.
Consultations are an integral part of all dental treatments so that you may fully understand the procedures required to fix the issue with your teeth.
Humans grow two sets of teeth. The first set of teeth appears at about six months of age. This stage is known as teething and can be quite painful for an infant. Children have 20 "milk teeth" evenly distributed across the quadrants.
The second, permanent set is formed between the ages of six and twelve years. The new set replaces the 20 teeth of the old set. A new tooth forms underneath the old one, pushing it out of the jaw. An additional 8-12 teeth grow, giving most adults from 28-32 teeth.
This set can last for life when given proper dental care through a regular program of dental hygiene, including brushing with water or toothpaste as well as periodic professional cleaning by a dentist or hygienist.
