Genetics has a special application in the field of reproductive medicine. Technology has been developed that allows embryos to be tested for certain abnormalities before they are transferred to the uterus. This technology is pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and it allows embryos developed through IVF to be screened for known genetic disorders. PGD provides particular benefits to patients at risk of passing inherited genetic diseases, such ascystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, on to their children.
PGD technology may also lead to further improvements in embryo selection – allowing for selection of only the highest quality embryos that are most likely to lead to a healthy pregnancy.
