In 2001, El Salvador replaced the Salvadorian colon (SVC) with the US Dollar (USD) as its official currency. This change benefits all tourists and businesses since all costs are transparent and easily compared. $1000 USD in the United States is the same as $1000 USD in El Salvador - except tourists will receive a lot more for their money in this nearby country. Credit and debit cards are convenient and relatively secure. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted; American Express cards are accepted in some businesses. However, do not assume that you can pay with a credit card - inquire first. Traveler’s checks are safe and almost universally accepted, especially in larger towns and tourist centers. Again, it is best to inquire first. A variety of US and Canadian banks, as well as Salvadoran banks, are available in San Salvador, San Miguel and Santa Ana. |
